Colonial expansion continued and by 2490, UEG colonial space encompassed over 800 colonies in the Orion Arm, including planets, moons, asteroids, mining facilities, and relay stations.[9] The success of colonization of the Outer Colonies made the Inner Colonies the primary stronghold, both military and economic, though they relied heavily on raw materials supplied by the Outer Colonies. During this period, the planet Reach (orbiting Epsilon Eridani, right on Earth's metaphorical doorstep) became the UNSC's primary naval yard and training academy. Reach was a major producer of warships and colony vessels, as well as a training ground for covert operatives and Special Forces.

By 2559, a number of former-colony worlds were involved in such de-glassing elements including Bliss and Meridian.[12] Biko was also at least partially re-settled, and a number of settlers returned to Reach by to begin the process of restoring their homeworld.[15] By 2589, Reach had been re-terraformed to some degree and open for re-settlement.[16]
Many colonies are named after locations on Earth, while others receive more descriptive or abstract names. Some worlds are only known by their astronomical designation, with the name of the star the world orbits followed by a numeric designation most often rendered in Roman numerals. On some colony worlds such as New Jerusalem, the capital city shares its name with the planet, as it is common for a colony's initial population center to be considered synonymous with the colony itself.[23] The Earth Survey Catalog also exists to document various extrasolar planets, assigning them identification codes.[24]
The Inner Colonies encompassed a region of space in at least a 10.5 light-year three-dimensional radius from Earth. Beyond that were the Outer Colonies. Other colonies were established even further - Coral, at 42 light-years;[27] and Madrigal, the most distant known colony, which lay in the 23 Librae system, 83.7 light-years from Earth.[28] Despite its relatively short distance from Earth, at approximately 12 lightyears, Harvest was considered the furthest Outer Colony in 2525, at six weeks of Slipspace travel away from Madrigal and two months from Reach.[29] Despite its relative scale, humanity's empire takes up only a minuscule portion of the Milky Way galaxy itself, all human-colonized systems existing within a bubble of 100 light-years around Sol in contrast to the overall scale of the galaxy which is 100,000 light-years in diameter.[30][Note 1] However, humans often use the word "galaxy" in colloquial speech when describing humanity's sphere of influence.[31]
The data in the following table represents those colony worlds and star systems in which very little or no information is currently known about them. As such, they cannot be included in the above table.
As long as you have Colonial Affairs unlocked, you will be able to start colonizing - targets for colonization must be decentralized nations. The list of decentralized nations is set at the beginning of the game - once they are all colonized, there will be no more ways to establish a colony.
Establishing a colony is a simple task of clicking the Establish Colony button from the Diplomatic Lens at the bottom of the screen. A menu will show up, showing you all the possible targets for colonization available to you. Click one to begin colonizing, immediately getting a single province in the region. Slowly but surely, the rest of the region will start to get colonized, with the rate dictated by your colonial growth, which can be increased by leveling up your Colonial Affairs Institution.
One of the earliest battles in the Inner colonies was the Battle of Camber. 5.5 million people were killed in the battle, and the planet was glassed.[8] Nearly a decade later, Miridem would come under attack leading to the capture of Dr. Catherine Halsey.[9] Actium would fall[10] with Skopje[11] at about the same time. In a rare moment, the colony of Ballast would come under attack and the UNSC would win the battle.[12]
The Battle for Arcadia was a battle for the colony Arcadia in the Procyon system, which occurred in the immediate aftermath of the Harvest Campaign. While the battle resulted in a UNSC victory and a repelling of the Covenant forces, two UNSC ships, the Belfast and the Texas, were destroyed, and professor Ellen Anders, stationed aboard the UNSC Spirit of Fire, was captured. The colony was left mostly abandoned as the Covenant had located Arcadia, though it remained an inhabited colony until its eventual glassing in 2549.
Captain Cutter, full name James Gregory Cutter, is the captain of the UNSC Phoenix-class colony ship Spirit of Fire and her crew. For 28 years they have been adrift after being stranded in deep space.
Preston Cole counter-attacked by sending a force composed of UNSC Spirit of Fire and UNSC Prophecy back to Harvest after receiving a message from an ONI Prowler. The battle resulted in victory for Cole, despite major casualties. Upon discovering that the Covenant, under the command of 'Moramee, had excavated Forerunner artifacts in the northern polar region, Captain James Cutter deployed ground forces to remove the Covenant occupation.[6] After a heated fight on the planet's surface, the UNSC forces were able to examine the artifact, a star map,[7] and realized in horror that information had led the Covenant to another UEG colony: Arcadia.[8]
Fleeing from the Battle of Charybdis IX, UNSC Midsummer Night chased an Insurrectionist freighter to the Rubble and discovered that the Insurrectionists there had actually formed an alliance with a colony of Kig-Yar. These Kig-Yar supplied the weapons, and the Insurrectionists modified them. The crew of Midsummer Night, including its captain, Lieutenant Jacob Keyes, were captured, but later escaped and aided Spartan-II Gray Team and the Rubble's citizens stop an assault from the Kig-Yar leader, Reth, and 'Vadamee's forces. It later transpired that the Prophet of Truth had ordered the Kig-Yar to ally with the humans so that they could discover the location of Earth from stolen navigation data or through tracking devices in the weapons. Through this, the Covenant found two more worlds to attack.
Long before the events surrounding Halo, the classified UEG colony of Onyx had been designated the headquarters and training ground for the SPARTAN-III Program. However, the UNSC had no idea that the planet was in fact a huge Forerunner construct, integral to the Halo Array, and containing trillions of Sentinels. After John-117's destruction of Alpha Halo, the Sentinels were roused by the disruption of the Halo network and the portal leading into the Shield World at the planet's core began to close. At this time, a small group of Spartan-IIIs were training in a top honors exercise on the surface. After the humans failed to exchange the proper counter-responses, the Sentinels relabeled the "Reclaimers" as aboriginal subspecies and began to exterminate them. Led by Kurt-051, the Spartan-IIIs fought a guerrilla war against the Sentinels until Doctor Catherine Halsey arrived on Onyx and explained the wider situation. Knowing that the Forerunner technology buried in Onyx's core could turn the tide of the war for humanity, Halsey used Forerunner technology to send a message to Fleet Admiral Sir Terrence Hood, requesting reinforcements. Hood deployed Blue Team to Onyx, who stole a Covenant destroyer to reach the planet in time.
In the year 2552, the outer colonies of the United Earth Government (UEG) have rebels fighting against the jurisdiction of the United Nations Space Command (UNSC), but are in the midst of negotiating an end to the long-standing civil war. One particular colony on the planet Madrigal is rich in heavy hydrogen -- a substance used to power engines and in drugs -- though a local named Kwan dreams of leaving behind the backwater world for good. Her idyllic fantasy is interrupted when the Covenant attack the colony, easily overpowering the UEG defenders with their superior weaponry and slaughtering non-combatants sheltering inside its outpost.
Spain tried to regain control of Gibraltar, which Britain had declared a Crown colony, through military, diplomatic and economic pressure. Gibraltar was besieged and heavily bombarded during three wars between Britain and Spain but the attacks were repulsed on each occasion. By the end of the last siege, in the late 18th century, Gibraltar had faced fourteen sieges in 500 years. In the years after Trafalgar, Gibraltar became a major base in the Peninsular War. The colony grew rapidly during the 19th and early 20th centuries, becoming a key British possession in the Mediterranean. It was a key stopping point for vessels en route to India via the Suez Canal. A large British naval base was constructed there at great expense at the end of the 19th century and became the backbone of Gibraltar's economy.
Abu al-Hasan refortified Gibraltar with what the Arab chroniclers called "strong walls as a halo surrounds a crescent moon" in anticipation of renewed war, which duly broke out in 1339.[38] However, his forces suffered a disastrous defeat at the Battle of Río Salado in October 1340 and fell back to Algeciras.[39] The Castilians besieged the city for two years and eventually forced its surrender, though Gibraltar remained in Moorish hands.[40] The peninsula's defences had been greatly improved by Abu al-Hasan's construction of new walls, towers, magazines and a citadel, making its capture a much more difficult endeavour.[41] Alfonso XI once again laid siege in 1349 following the death of Abu al-Hasan but was thwarted by the arrival of the Black Death in 1350, which killed many of his soldiers and claimed his own life.[42]
After peace returned, Gibraltar underwent major changes during the reformist governorship of General Sir George Don, who took up his position in 1814. The damage caused by the Great Siege had long since been repaired, but Gibraltar was still essentially a medieval town in its layout and narrow streets. A lack of proper drainage had been a major contributing factor in the epidemics that had frequently ravaged the fortress. Don implemented improved sanitation and drainage as well as introducing street lighting, rebuilding St Bernard's Hospital to serve the civilian population and initiating the construction of the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity to serve Gibraltar's Protestant civilians.[133] For the first time, civilians began to have a say in the running of Gibraltar. An Exchange and Commercial Library was founded in 1817, with the Exchange Committee initially focused on furthering the interests of merchants based in the fortress. The Committee evolved into a local civilian voice in government, although it had no real powers.[134] A City Council was established in 1821, and in 1830 Gibraltar became a Crown colony. In the same year, the Gibraltar Police Force was established, modelled on London's pioneering Metropolitan Police Service,[135] and a Supreme Court was set up to try civil, criminal and mixed cases.[136] 2ff7e9595c
