The iSCSI Target made its debut as a free download for Windows 2008 R2 in April 2011, since then, there were more than 60,000 downloads. That was the first step to make it available for everyone. Now in Windows Server 2012, no more downloads and separate installation; it comes as a build-in feature. This blog will provide step-by-step instructions to enable and configure iSCSI Target.

The initiator is build in into Windows 2008 R2, I don't think there exists a seperate download, if it is updated it would be as part of the normal patches/service packs. (2.08 is offered for older versions =18986)

The Target software is a feature pack to be able to create targets other iscsi initiators can connect to. This is currently at version 3.3, no newer version is available at the time of this post (2012-01) -iscsi-software-target-3-3-for-windows-server-2008-r2-available-for-public-download.aspx

Make sure to download the initiator that is designed for your operating system. Microsoft provides builds for both 32-bit and 64-bit Windows. In the 64-bit category, versions are available for both x64-based processors and Itanium-based processors.

Most Linux based systems use the open-iscsi iSCSI initiator software which stores the IQN for the Linux server in a file located at /etc/iscsi/initiator. Here's an example of what the contents of the file looks like, you'll need to enter the IQN part which is iqn.1993-08.org.debian:01:d7eee36ce in this example to the Host Add.. screen in QuantaStor.

When an iSCSI initiator logs into a storage system like QuantaStor it uses a special identifier called an IQN which stands for iSCSI Qualified Name. This IQN for your server can be found in a file located at /etc/iscsi/initiatorname.iscsi. Simply 'more' the file to see what your IQN is and then use this to create a Host entry in the QuantaStor web management interface to represent this host. In this example the IQN is iqn.1994-05.com.redhat:5a66857c49dc:

3. Go back to your server and search iscsi initiator and select it. It comes along since Windows Server 2008. If you are using a previous server, Windows Server 2003, for example, you need to download and install it first.

Except in the case of multi-subnet failover clusters, SQL Server failover cluster instances require shared storage to host the database and log files. In production situations, you use a dedicated storage area network (SAN) device for this task. If you are using a fiber channel SAN, you use vendor software to make the connection between Microsoft Windows Server 2008 or Windows Server 2008 R2 and the SAN. If you are using iSCSI, you can use the vendor-supplied software or the iSCSI initiator that is included with the server operating system. Connecting by using the iSCSI initiator is covered in the next section, Connecting to the SAN by Using iSCSI Initiator.

iSCSI Initiator is a component built into the Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows 7 operating systems that you can use to connect to an iSCSI LUN by using an iSCSI target. When preparing two servers that will function as cluster nodes in a SQL Server 2012 failover cluster, you can configure each server to connect to the same iSCSI LUN for the purposes of shared storage. To connect to an iSCSI LUN by using an iSCSI initiator, perform the following steps: 2ff7e9595c
